Four makers who spend weeks eroding each form by hand, so that a manufactured object ends up behaving like a found one.

Mountain Workshop exists to make one thing: a desk-scale rock. The form begins as a plain thrown block, hollowed from the inside so it can be fired at all — a solid mass of that size would crack or explode in the kiln — and then left to dry slowly under cloth.
The erosion is the work. Over two to three weeks the hollows are carved, some of them opened through the wall, and then reworked repeatedly as the clay stiffens. This is deliberate: cutting a hole into leather-hard clay leaves a clean edge, which looks wrong. Weathering it instead produces the irregular, softened lip that a river or centuries of wind would leave.
The pieces are judged against the classical four qualities — 瘦 thinness, 透 openness, 漏 porosity, 皱 texture — which is a stricter brief than it sounds. A rock can be hollowed and still be dull. The studio rejects most of what it makes; the ones that survive are fired unglazed so the surface stays pale, matte and faintly granular.
